Chapter 30

Surprisingly, two days after that, the past would again have to be dealt with. It knocked at their door, waking all of them up. How surprised they were to see that it was going by the name of Meirelles, Mike, Marie, Jack, and Liam.

They had found them and invited themselves there.

“Oi. Hi, I’m Eric’s mom,” she told Lucas and then saw Eric in the back, looking at them from the other end of the living room. “Hi, Son!”

Eric remained silent. Richard had told them. Tom had probably helped them to find him. Or Marie. His credit card? His iCloud? Whatever the case, they were all there. Standing in front of his door. His family, his band, Marie. They had all decided to come, just like that. Everyone except for his dad.

“Do you mind if we come inside?” his mother asked Lucas.

“Ah . . . Not at all. Sorry.” He tried to get out of the way so they could enter the house.

“I’m sorry for waking you guys up.”

“It’s okay.”

Isabella was really surprised by the sudden invasion. Neither of them was presentable at all, and she stayed on her mattress.

“Hey, Eric. We got worried, and we’re here now. How are things going?” asked Isadora, smiling.

“We . . . Everything’s okay.”

“Hmmm. Okay. Do you need anything?”

“No. We’re good.”

Isadora hugged her brother very tightly. “Don’t you need to see a doctor or anything?”

“No, thanks, Isa . . .”

Silence. His mother was checking out the house and its inhabitants. Eric supposed his mom remembered Isabella and that she probably wouldn’t like to see her there. But she didn’t seem to mind her at all.

“So Richard told me you came here to . . . get away from everything?” She paused. “To get clean?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s . . . good.” His mother was looking at them all.

“So, what do you want me to tell you?” Eric was looking at his mother. He didn’t really know how to feel about this invasion.

“Nothing. Do you have something you wanna say to me? Or maybe do you want me to tell you something?”

“You thought it was a good idea to come here uninvited? To see me like this?”

“Ah, please . . .You’re alive and getting better. That’s all we all care about.” Mike, Isadora, and Marie nodded. “You wouldn’t answer anyone’s calls or messages.”

“Yeah, I turned off my phone. Thought people could take a hint.”

“We missed you, Eric. We were all worried to death about you” said Isadora.

“Hmm, that’s why you guys decided to organize a fucking school trip to come and see me?The part about me trying to be alone didn’t reach y’all? Feel better now?” Not even Eric could understand why he was sounding so angry.

“Yeah, pretty much. I know how it looks, Eric. But we’re not going to apologize for caring about you. We didn’t get one piece of information for almost a month. We got worried, and we’re here to help, but don’t worry. We’re not going to sleep here with you,” said his mom.

Eric coughed again and shrugged his shoulders.
